At the Royal Harbour Academy we run a boxing club for our students; we have qualified coaches who run the boxing club at the Upper Site on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. One of our Pastoral Support Officers, Mrs Whitehead, runs the club alongside Gabrielle Scott, Hornets Boxing Club.
Gabrielle commented: “As an ex-pupil of the school, who struggled with my own mental health and confidence, I know how much boxing helped me. I now work for the Hornets Boxing Club as a level 1 coach and I have loved working alongside Mrs Whitehead and passing my knowledge onto the pupils that have participated. They have all done so well and I’m very proud of them all. I am looking forward to seeing them all again in September, with lots of them now working towards their 3rd certificate. All students are also welcome to join the Hornets Boxing Club if they wish to continue during the holidays; everyone is welcome.”
There are many benefits of boxing, ranging from improving balance, strengthening upper body and core, boosting endurance and confidence, and enhancing mood and mental wellbeing. Students who attend the sessions can also work towards gaining certificates from England Boxing. We are proud of our students who received awards this week - 1 preliminary award and 2 standard level awards!
Mrs Whitehead went on to say: “I have loved being able to help coach our pupils and help them achieve their boxing awards; they have all shown so much interest and commitment and it has made me very proud to watch how boxing has helped their confidence, fitness and general wellbeing. I am looking forward to continuing the boxing training in September and hopefully seeing some new faces join us.”
