A group of KS3 girls from RHA recently attended an inspiring I Belong computing event, where they explored the exciting world of physical computing using Micro:bits and LED technology.
During the workshop, the pupils worked in pairs to program Micro:bits to control a NeoPixel LED strip containing 10 individual lights. They experimented with coding each LED to display different colours using the full-colour wheel, allowing them to create beautiful, dynamic light displays.
One of the highlights of the session was using a shake command to control when the lights turned on. The pupils then progressed to more advanced logic coding, using a forever if tilt = true then loop to make the lights respond to movement. To put this to the test, they placed the Micro:bit and LED strip inside a foam-padded box. When they moved the box, the lights activated—an exciting moment that showcased the power of coding and creativity!
"This hands-on experience gave the pupils the chance to collaborate, problem-solve, and see the real-world applications of computing. Inspired by their success, they are now keen to start a Computing Club at RHA, where they can continue exploring Micro:bits and physical computing projects." - Mrs Conron Computing Teacher
Well done to the girls who took part—we can’t wait to see what you create next!
