Year 12 Students from The Royal Harbour Academy Experience University Life at Canterbury Christ Church University

On 27th March, 16 Year 12 students from The Royal Harbour Academy were given the exciting opportunity to explore university life during a visit to Canterbury Christ Church University. The visit offered them a valuable insight into what university education entails, helping them to make informed decisions about their future.

The day began with a guided tour of the university’s vibrant campus, where the students had the chance to see firsthand the facilities that make Canterbury Christ Church University unique. From lecture halls to study spaces and social areas, the students were able to get a feel for what it might be like to study at a university. The tour also gave them a glimpse into the daily life of a university student, showing them how a campus is designed to cater to both academic and personal needs.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for the students to ask questions about university life. They were particularly curious about the differences between a city university and a campus-based one. The students learned that a city university, like Canterbury Christ Church University, allows students to immerse themselves in the surrounding city life, which includes access to local amenities, cultural attractions, and a diverse social scene. In contrast, campus-based universities tend to offer a more self-contained environment with all facilities and resources located within the campus itself. This conversation provided the students with a deeper understanding of the various options available to them when considering their higher education choices.

After lunch, the students participated in an ethical debate that encouraged them to think critically about a wide range of subjects. The debate session allowed them to explore complex issues and engage in meaningful discussions, sharpening their analytical skills and broadening their perspectives. The debate also emphasized the importance of understanding multiple viewpoints and considering the ethical implications of different actions and decisions.

This visit to Canterbury Christ Church University was a memorable and informative experience for the students, providing them with a glimpse into university life and an opportunity to think about their futures. The trip not only sparked curiosity about higher education but also helped the students develop skills in critical thinking, debate, and inquiry—skills that will undoubtedly serve them well in their academic and professional careers.

As the students left the university campus, they were filled with a sense of excitement and motivation to further explore their educational options. For many, the experience has provided a clearer picture of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead as they continue to plan for their futures beyond Sixth Form.
