Year 7 Students Learn Life-Saving CPR Skills in Two-Day Training Event

Updated: Jan 28

Last week our Year 7 students had an invaluable opportunity to learn life-saving skills during a two-day CPR training event held on 16th & 17th January at The Royal Harbour Academy, Lower site.  The event combined educational demonstrations with hands-on training, ensuring students not only understood the importance of CPR but also practiced the essential techniques themselves.

This initiative was supported by Community Lifesavers who are a Kent-based social action not-for-profit project, run by trained volunteers who provided expertise and resources to ensure the success of the event.  The training was particularly rewarding for the instructors, who noted the students’ enthusiasm and progress. “It was amazing to see how much the students learned and retained,” said Petra Agnew. “When they completed the recap quiz at the end of the session, many students confidently answered all questions correctly. Some even impressed us by volunteering to give demonstrations to their classmates.”

Over the course of the training, the certified trainers provided step-by-step instructions on how to respond in an emergency situation. The training included not only CPR techniques but also guidance on operating a defibrillator, ensuring students of all abilities gained comprehensive skills to handle emergencies.

Students eagerly joined in practical sessions, learning how to assess a situation and perform chest compressions. The interactive format ensured every participant could gain confidence in applying these critical skills.

The training emphasised the importance of quick thinking and effective action in emergencies, empowering students to make a difference in real-life scenarios.

By introducing CPR training at an early age, the school aims to create a generation of young individuals prepared to step up in critical moments; this training has been offered to our Year 7 students for several years now.

Kelly Pope, one of our Year 7 teachers commented ,“The training was very detailed. The structure and adult support allowed the children to work well in small groups, allowing all children to take part in the activities that were set. They were challenged with questions and also given a quiz that allowed them to showcase what they had learnt and were also able to demonstrate this through the activities they completed. The children loved it and all said how much they enjoyed the hands-on activities, and how they can now tell the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest”.

A special thank you goes to Community Life Savers for not only training our Year 7 students but also for their dedication to offering CPR training to all Year 7 students across Kent. Their commitment to making these essential skills accessible to young people is deeply appreciated.
